TLDR: Your wedding dress fittings are where the magic happens: the gown you ordered is transformed from a beautiful dress into YOUR dress, perfectly tailored to your body. ThePerfectWedding.com's bridal experts walk you through every fitting appointment, what to bring, how to prepare, and what common alterations to expect so there are no surprises.

Key Facts at a Glance

  • Most brides have 2 to 3 fittings over 6 to 8 weeks (Source: The Knot, 2025)
  • The first fitting happens 3 to 5 months before the wedding (Source: WeddingWire)
  • Bring your shoes, undergarments, and one trusted person to every fitting (Source: Brides.com)
  • The bustle lesson happens at the final fitting. Have your maid of honor attend to learn it
  • For alteration costs, see our wedding dress alterations guide

The Three Fittings Explained

First fitting (3 to 5 months before)

What happens: You try on the dress for the first time since ordering (or since buying off the rack). The seamstress pins and marks every adjustment: hemming, taking in/letting out the bodice, adjusting straps, and planning the bustle.

What to bring: Your wedding shoes (at the correct heel height), the undergarments you will wear on the day (see our undergarment guide), and any accessories that attach to the dress (belt, sash).

What to expect: The dress may not zip, may be too long, or may not fit your torso perfectly. This is completely normal. That is why fittings exist. Do not panic.

Duration: 45 to 60 minutes.

Second fitting (6 to 8 weeks before)

What happens: You try on the altered dress to check that all adjustments are correct. The seamstress makes any remaining tweaks and marks final adjustments.

What to bring: Same shoes and undergarments as the first fitting. Bring your maid of honor or the person who will help you get dressed on the day.

What to expect: The dress should fit significantly better than the first fitting. Minor adjustments may still be needed. Practice sitting, walking, and hugging in the dress.

Duration: 30 to 45 minutes.

Final fitting (2 to 3 weeks before)

What happens: Everything should be perfect. The seamstress does a final check, demonstrates the bustle, and steams the dress. You take the dress home.

What to bring: Your maid of honor (to learn the bustle), your phone (take a video of the bustle demonstration), and a garment bag for transport.

What to expect: This is your "wow" moment. The dress fits perfectly, you see the complete look, and you are ready.

Duration: 20 to 30 minutes.

Common Alterations at Each Fitting

Alteration When It Happens Cost Range How Common
Hemming First fitting $100 - $250 Very common (90%+ of brides)
Taking in the bodice First fitting $100 - $300 Very common
Adding/adjusting bustle First or second fitting $50 - $150 Universal for dresses with trains
Shortening straps First fitting $30 - $80 Common
Adding cups/boning First fitting $30 - $100 Common for strapless
Letting out (if needed) First fitting $100 - $300 Less common but normal
Final adjustments Second fitting Included Minor tweaks

How to Prepare for Your Fittings

Schedule early. Book your first fitting 3 to 5 months before the wedding. If you wait too long, rush fees may apply. See our dress shopping timeline for the full schedule.

Maintain your weight. Try to stay within a stable weight range during the alteration period. Significant changes between fittings create additional work and cost.

Bring the same person each time. Consistency helps. Your maid of honor or mom provides emotional support and learns how the dress works (buttons, bustle, train management).

Speak up. If something feels uncomfortable, too tight, or not right, tell the seamstress immediately. Fittings are the time to fix problems, not the wedding morning.

Take photos. Photograph the dress from all angles at each fitting. This helps you track progress and serves as a reference between appointments.

Expert Tip: "Your fittings should feel exciting, not stressful. A good seamstress makes you feel confident and cared for. If your seamstress rushes you, dismisses your concerns, or makes you feel bad about your body, find a different one. You deserve someone who treats your dress and your feelings with equal care."

Fitting FAQ

What if the dress does not fit at the first fitting?

That is literally what the fitting is for. Very few dresses fit perfectly as-is. The first fitting is a planning session where the seamstress maps out every adjustment. Trust the process.

Can my partner come to my fitting?

That is your choice. If you want the dress to be a surprise, keep fittings private. If you want your partner's input, they are welcome. There are no rules.

What if I gain or lose weight between fittings?

Minor changes (5 to 10 pounds) are easily accommodated. Larger changes may require additional work and cost. If you are concerned, discuss it with your seamstress early. See our alterations guide for more on weight changes and timing.
