Step-by-step guide to the bathroom in your wedding dress

First, check the bathroom

A bathroom visit in your wedding dress requires a bit more planning, and that's why the first step starts upon arrival at your wedding venue. One of the first things you or your master of ceremonies should do when you arrive is to peek your head around the bathroom door. Make sure the floor is clean, because otherwise, your bridal gown will be dirty before you even step into the stall. If the floor is sparkling, you know you can go with peace of mind when the time comes.

Opt for the Presidential Suite of bathrooms

You can't avoid it; at some point, you'll really need to go to the bathroom. A disabled toilet is often larger, has a bar to hold onto, and gives you more room to move. So if you have the choice, do yourself a favor and choose this Presidential Suite of toilets.

Need help going to the bathroom in your wedding dress?

Ask your mother/friend/another discreet female person if they want to help you. We understand you don't want an audience, but believe me: it's for the best. Depending on the size of your wedding dress, it might even be helpful to ask two people!

Once you've found volunteers, it's time for phase two:

  • 1. Enter the stall | Step into the stall and let any helpers follow you. Yes, the door stays open, but because of your wedding dress, no one will be treated to a view of your bare booty.
  • 2. Lingerie off | Take your panties all the way off. Crucial for step four, which would otherwise be impossible.
  • 3. Lift your dress | Lift the front of your wedding dress up to your waist and hold it. If you have a hoop skirt or petticoat under your wedding dress, don't forget to lift it too! Extra tip for hoop skirt wearers: grab the bottom ring of the hoop and make a sort of 'basket' with your hoop skirt. Then you tuck your entire dress into it (including the train), pull it forward, and hold it with one hand. In the video, we show you how to do this using the Bridal Buddy! You now have the other hand free for the rest. This method is only possible if you're wearing stockings instead of pantyhose and haven't opted for a bodysuit with buttons.

Lifehack! Easily make your own Bridal Buddy by cutting two holes for your legs in an IKEA bag ;)

  • 4. Backwards on the toilet | Sit backwards on the toilet. Whether you have help or not, it's the best way to sit facing the tank. That way, you only have to worry about the front of your dress, as the train hangs behind the toilet seat or is held by your helpers and is therefore not in the 'danger zone'.
  • 5. Lean forward | Lean forward when you need to pee. That way, you don't 'aim' at the front of your wedding dress, and it's relatively safe even if you accidentally drop a fold of your dress. For a 'number 2', you obviously don't lean forward but rather backward for the same reason.
  • 6. Toilet paper | Ask one of the ladies to hand you some toilet paper.
  • 7. Lingerie back on | So far, the easy part... Now you have to get your bridal lingerie back on while still holding the front of your wedding dress! Place one leg on the toilet seat for more stability or ask one of the helpers to hold the front as well.
  • 8. Adjust clothing | Ask your bridal squad to adjust your clothing a bit before you mingle with your guests again! It wouldn't be cool if your dress was still tucked into your pantyhose.

Well, that's that!

The relief is probably intense if it worked, but you'll still need to keep your wits about you. Because how do you get out of that cramped space? Because let's face it, at this moment you're still backwards.

  • 9. Don't trip | Hold the front of your wedding dress while making sure you don't trip over the train as you slowly walk backward. We probably don't need to tell you that a bride who trips in a toilet stall and falls backward is so funny that you'll likely hear about it for years to come.

Think ahead

A smart girl is prepared for her future (oh my... you probably hear your grandma talking now). Therefore, remember that not only a toilet visit but also other daily activities become much more difficult when you're wearing a wedding dress. Practice in the store during your final fitting session with ordinary things like walking, sitting, dancing, and moving. Also, bring someone along during this session so that person can learn how to help you. On your wedding day, you can enjoy it to the fullest!
